o Texas community colleges are committed to expanding distance education. More than 80 percent of distance education course enrollments in the state are at community colleges.

o TACC oversees two distance learning initiatives: the Virtual College of Texas (VCT) and STARLINK. Member dues, state appropriations, state grants, Federal funds, and private grants support these efforts.

o The mission of the Virtual College of Texas (VCT) is to provide all Texans access to distance learning courses and programs offered by all VCT member colleges.

o Since its beginning in Fall 1998, VCT enrollment has increased from 230 students to 1,200 students three years later (Fall 2001).

o The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board bestowed VCT the Star Award in 2001.

o STARLINK, a statewide satellite network composed of all Texas community and technical colleges, one university, and twelve out-of-state members, produces and distributes a variety of videoconference programs that provide staff development and training for college trustees, administrators, faculty, and staff.
